Job Description:
As a Senior Battery Design Engineer, you will be an integral part of our Product Development team, focused on supporting the launch of our cutting-edge proprietary cell technology. In this role, you will be responsible for the mechanical design and validation of lithium-ion cells in pouch and prismatic can formats. Your expertise and contributions will play a key role in enhancing the performance and manufacturability of our core products.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Lead technical discussions with customers and partner organizations to understand their requirements and incorporate R&D advancements into product design changes.
2. Initiate engineering change orders to refine and modify cell designs, utilizing your proficiency with 3D modeling software (Solidworks preferred) and GD&T, including tolerance stackup analysis.
3. Project cell properties (e.g. capacity, energy density) from given electrode properties, leveraging your deep knowledge of lithium-ion cells.
4. Collaborate with the Advanced Manufacturing team to develop mechanical cell designs that push performance barriers while ensuring manufacturability.
5. Conduct design validation testing on components and assemblies, utilizing your experience in using DFMEA to identify and address risk areas early in the design phase.
6. Complete technical reports and effectively communicate results to the broader team and partner organizations.
7. Design and source tools and fixtures as needed to support product development and testing.
8. Exhibit the ability to execute quickly on high visibility projects with aggressive timelines.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
2. A minimum of 5 years of experience in the design and validation of lithium-ion cells.
3. Proficiency with common battery manufacturing processes, including ultrasonic welding, laser welding, heat sealing, etc.
4. Experience with pack and module design is a plus.
5. Familiarity with designing cells for enhanced abuse tolerance is an additional advantage.
